Understanding Low Sex Drive and Holistic Therapies

A lowered sex drive, or low libido, is a declining interest in sexual connection and intimacy. You may feel a change in the frequency or intensity of sexual desire. I understand this is a common concern that can affect all gender identities, ages, and relationships. This frustrating lack of desire may lead to relationship problems, communication troubles, and feelings of isolation and confusion. Today's busy lifestyles may cause your sex drive to fluctuate with stress levels. Still, the persistent loss of sex drive is cause for concern.

You may find yourself questioning your physical and mental health, as well as the stability of your intimate relationships. Low libido has both physical and psychological reasons, and by uncovering the underlying factors, you can heal, grow, and reclaim your sexual desires.

Common Causes of Decreased Libido

Your physical and sexual desire is driven by many things, including hormones, aging, and medical reasons. A hormone imbalance with your estrogen or testosterone level will influence your sex drive. As will some birth control methods, and the changing hormones that occur with menopause and growing older. Our ever-evolving bodies are also subject to injuries, ailments, and medications that can directly influence passion. For some, painful sex is also an influential aspect.

Mental health concerns, such as depression and anxiety, may impact libido as well. We should also recognize that past resentments and traumas, body image distortions, and doubting yourself or your partner as a compatible sexual partner contribute to declining desires. You may feel like your partnership is missing sexual attraction, or you have evolved away from previous turn-ons into uncertainty.

What are the symptoms of a decreased sex drive?

As interest in sex declines, there may be some accompanying physical indications. You might find ejaculatory or erectile dysfunction, female sexual dysfunction, anorgasmia (the inability to orgasm), painful intercourse, or vaginal dryness.

You may also find as your interest declines, so do your ideas, fantasies, or wishes about sex decline. Perhaps you have also lost interest in initiating romantic encounters, or you recognize a change in your daily life that links to your sexual activity levels.

These overlapping layers also flow into struggles with communication, confidence, body awareness, and self-image. I offer a supportive, holistic, and collaborative approach to making positive changes in sexual health.

What can you do for low libido?

Holistically approaching a lowered sex drive begins with understanding your primary reasons for these feelings. Trust yourself to take the first steps toward a fulfilling sex life and healthy relationships. These first steps are often the hardest, but so worth it.

Lean on your medical practitioners and therapist to investigate the physical and psychological roots of your lagging libido.
